I return after two weeks to talk to you about the one and only Scooby Doo and the gang. That dog has been in my life since I was a toddler, and I still adore that show in all its iterations. The live action movies are fun too, but for me- it’s the original Scoob and Co. from the 70’s (First season was in’ 69 but the show is always going to be from the 70s to me).
I have so many memories of watching this show, from when I was just a wee Woodrow, through my childhood, and then again as my Niece was growing up. The late 90s'/early 2000s version is very fun- the gang looks the same but the colors are brighter and lines are sharper. My niece was all about the Hex Girls, a girl group who looked like cool goths and was friends with the gang. My brother can still sing their theme song (and will upon request). She made us watch it so many times!
While visiting Pittsburgh recently, we went to a very cool They Bar called Harold’s Haunt, and a newer version of Scooby Doo was playing on one of the screens. We had so much fun shouting out to the screen and trying to guess who the villain really was. My only gripe with that version of the show was how hard they tried to make us think Velma was into Shaggy
Girl, stop.
Anyhow, I credit Scooby Doo with being my gateway to horror, and for being an enduring tribute to friends who are there for each other- especially when there is a mystery. It’s also a tribute to dog friendship which is the best friendship of all.
Ahem, please do not tell any cats I said that.
Since returning from our travels, I have seen a few flicks:
The Little Mermaid (2023). It was cute, Halle Bailey and Melissa McCarthy were great, the songs were fun, but it just didn’t take my breath away.
Aliens (1986). Gosh, this really is a perfect movie. We watched the Directors cut and it added some scenes about Ripley’s daughter (who we only hear about) that really give more of a sense of her as Mama Bear vs Alien Queen. Also, there is just so much goo in this movie!
Consecration (2023). You know if I see a nun in a trailer for a horror movie I am going to try it. The cast- which included Jenna Malone and Danny Houston- was good, but this plot was undercooked. It was like a lot of films that posit “the antichrist is returning” and well, I say skip this one.
Somebody Somwhere. I finished this and what a great season. This show is so good and I hope it wins awards or something so more people find out about it. Glad to hear it just got picked up for a third season.
Ted Lasso. The series finale was sweet. I will miss those Greyhounds. I suspect a spin-off is brewing, but I guess we will have to wait and see.
Shiny Happy People (2023). Ok, I never knew who the Duggar’s even were until a woman stopped by the bookstore where I worked and asked if we could order one of their books so she could look at it. I did a quick search and told her she should try Barnes & Noble, who would likely have the book so she could peruse it. The book was by some of the Duggar Daughters, explaining how being obedient and submissive, while dressing like an extra from Little House on the Prairie was the way to get a husband. So, not for our little progressive AF bookstore. Religious Cults are the worst cults. These people have like 19 kids, the oldest son is in prison for child pornography- and has been in trouble for other things like sexually assaulting his own sisters. The second oldest daughter was recently cited for endangering the welfare of a child. Like, what the hell, gigantic family? Anyhow, I never watched their many series on TLC, but I cannot stop watching this docuseries.
